Your life is as much about business as it is about words, and real freelance writers don’t go around dreamily spouting off about how much they love to write. It’s hard work. You will have 10 to 20 ideas rejected for every one you sell—and that’s by the time you get good at it. Because you will likely work at home, your Really Big Story That Will Change Life As We Know It will be disrupted by the most mundane things, such as thoughts of soup and cleaning the base of the toilet. Mortgage companies and reputable car dealers will laugh at you and tell you to come back when you’ve had a “real” job for a year. You will be broke. You will be alone.

12 October 2007In Chimacum, on Washington state’s Olympic Peninsula, there are probably more dairy cows than humans. It is a place where it’s common to see a 1972 Ford F-100 hard at work, way past its expiration date. Where those who own a patch of ground extend their hospitality to friends to park a trailer/bus/boat and live a while until they find a job/squeeze/studio space. Where the pie is from scratch and serving bad coffee is a sin. In Chimacum, not everyone bothers to replace their missing teeth, and that is perfectly acceptable.It is also the place where I became a hardwired environmentalist — not because it was chic or because of yuppie guilt, but because it was a matter of survival.
